Pre-Games Training Camps Guide goes live

London 2012 launched the online Pre-Games Training Camps Guide at an official reception at the British Ambassador’s residence on Thursday 14 August in Beijing.

The event was hosted by Sebastian Coe, Chair of London 2012, British Olympic Association Chairman Lord Moynihan, VisitBritain Chief Executive Tom Wright and Olympics Minister Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP.

Over 100 National Olympic Committees and representatives of over half of the International Sports Federations were presented with details of the Guide, which outlines over 600 high-class facilities across the UK offering their services as training venues for international teams in the run-up to the London 2012 Games.

The Princess Royal Sports Complex and Wellington School have been selected by London 2012 as potential training facilities for Olympic teams in the sports of handball, Tae Kwon Do, judo, archery, fencing, table tennis and wrestling.

NOCs choosing to base their athletes at the School in the run up to the 2012 Games will receive a financial award of up to £25,000 from the London 2012 Organising Committee to help with expenses.

Commenting on the Guide, London 2012 Chair Sebastian Coe said: “We said that we wanted the London Games to be for athletes, and the facilities listed in this Guide will really help overseas athletes prepare well. It also provides a great opportunity for towns throughout the UK to get involved in our plans.

“The process we have been through shows a great spread of high quality facilities throughout the UK that can be used by elite level athletes. The new website will continue to be an asset to keep an up-to-date log of the elite facilities we have across the UK.”

Manager of the Princess Royal Sports Complex, JJ Rowland, said: "It is a great honour for us to have Wellington School's sports facilities recognised in this way by London 2012.

"We hope that our inclusion in the Guide will encourage one or more Olympic teams to come to Somerset and train ahead of the 2012 Games."

The Pre-Games Training Camps Guide is available online now in both English and French. The Wellington School entry in the Guide is also available in English and French.
