London 2012 Pre-Games Training Camp Guide
Wellington
School is hoping to attract some of the
world’s best athletes to Somerset following
the announcement today by the organisers of
the London 2012 Olympic Games that the
Princess Royal Sports Complex is to be
included in London 2012's Pre-Games Training
Camp Guide.
The
Guide, to be published by the London
Organising Committee of the Olympic Games
and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), will include
all sports facilities around the UK
recommended as world-class by London 2012,
and suitable for Olympic teams as they make
their preparations for the 2012 Games.
The School’s facilities have been selected
from over 1000 applications for inclusion in
the Guide, which is aimed at National
Olympic Committees (NOCs) and National
Paralympic Committees (NPCs) looking to host
training camps in the UK ahead of the 2012
Games.
London 2012 is offering financial award of
up to £25,000 to National Olympic Committees
and National Paralympic Committees to help
encourage teams to base themselves in the
UK.
The Princess Royal Sports Complex will be
included in the Guide for the Olympic sports
of Archery, Fencing, Handball, Judo, Table
Tennis, Taekwondo and Wrestling.
The Guide, which will be available online
for the first time, will be launched on 14
August in Beijing to National Olympic
Committees from across the world.
Following the announcement, Wellington
School’s Headmaster, Martin Reader, said:
“This is fantastic news for the School and
for Wellington. We are very pleased that the
outstanding facilities we have to offer at
the School have been recognised in this way
by LOCOG.
“The Olympic Games in London will
undoubtedly be one of the greatest sporting
events ever seen in the UK and we really
hope that Wellington will be able to play
its part by welcoming an Olympic team to the
town.”
The
evaluation of potential pre-Games training
camps represents one of the most
comprehensive reviews of sporting facilities
in the UK and has been overseen by a
steering group comprising the British
Olympic Association, the English Institute
of Sport and the Sports Councils of England,
Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales and has
included sport-specific feedback from
National Governing Bodies of Sport.
Wellington School believes that the
top-class sports facilities it has on offer
at the Princess Royal Sports Complex,
coupled with its extensive boarding and
catering facilities, will make it the ideal
venue for visiting Olympic teams. The School
is now also hoping that inclusion in the
Guide will encourage more sports and
organisations to use its facilities for
major events and training camps.
